Be sure to catch 20/20 on ABC at 10:00 p.m. (EST) and see the subject of my next book, SAVAGE SON. It is the story of Bart Whitaker, a young, handsome man who attempted to have his entire family slaughtered.

The only surviving member of the massacre, Bart's father, released a book on the case last year, however, Kent Whitaker's book is much different than mine. Mr. Whitaker focused more on his religious angle of forgiveness while SAVAGE SON takes a much more in-depth look at the crime, Bart Whitaker's past, and the backgrounds on those who helped him kill.

Sorry no new updates for the last week. I just completed the Fiesta Wildflower bike ride of 104 miles, 20 mph winds, and Hills from Hell and am recuperating.

The Independent Film Festival Boston 2009 kicks off today and has a good smattering of familiar fest genre fare as well as some newer titles on tap.

Horror Comes to Toronto @ the Reel World Film Festival - April 15-19, 2009

Once again, slim horror pickings at another mainstream film fest. This time around it's the Reel World Film Festival in Toronto, Canada.

No outright horror to speak of but there are several interesting short films with either an apocalyptic bent, paranoia, or death angle to them, plus, one feature length comedy about decapitation and circus freaks. There's still hope.

Also, Giancarlo Esposito, best known as Buggin' Out from director Spike Lee's DO THE RIGHT THING is a guest speaker. Yes, his horror CV is limited, but how can you not want to see an actor who starred in the television adaptation of Peter Benchley's CREATURE, about a mechanical shark, and also a B-movie gem called CHUPACABRA TERROR.

Horror Comes to Baltimore @ Johns Hopkins Film Fest 2009...Sort Of - April 9-12, 2009

I'm not quite sure what to make of the Johns Hopkins Film Fest. Seems a couple of DVD rentals mixed in with a short film or two. Kinda weird.

Any way, there is a smattering of horror films on board, or at least some semblance of horror. Or, some relatively close tie-in to horror. Or, well, I think you get the idea.

What's the Hang-up with HANGER? Director Ryan Nicholson Speaks

Last week, I wrote about the unfortunate cancellation of director Ryan Nicholson's latest blood-drenched opus, HANGER, at the 2009 Philadelphia Film Festival (see picture at left). This concerned me because last fall, Nicholson's GUTTERBALLS was slated to appear at a film festival in my hometown of San Antonio, Texas, but failed to appear. Furthermore, Nicholson's Plotdigger Films website was also down last week.

So, being the inquisitive sort, I tracked down Ryan via MySpace and asked him what the hell was going on.

I am happy to report that all is fine in Nicholson's world. He immediately wrote me back and stated that "We had some technical problems with the sound synch and rendering issues. Better to fix everything perfectly than to show something half-assed." As for the website, Nicholson added that it was "down while we prep the store..." and that "when it opens up, it will kick serious ass!"

I love this guy's enthusiasm.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Dead by Dawn Film Festival Late Deadline is tomorrow April 5, 2009

This is for all you horror filmmakers out there -- tomorrow, April 5, 2009, is the 2nd and final deadline for film submissions for the Dead by Dawn Film Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Dead by Dawn is self-billed as "Scotland's premiere horror film festival."

Here are the specs and it looks like it is actually free to submit. Shocker!

Dead by Dawn takes place April 30 - May 3, 2009.

Very slim horror pickens at the Sonoma Valley International Film Fest, but one "can't miss" film.

That would be TALES FROM THE SCRIPT featuring several screenwriters including many genre luminaries such as John Carpenter (pictured left), Larry Cohen, Frank Darabont, Mick Garris, and more telling their own horror stories of trying to get their scripts made in Hollywood.

Horror Comes to Phoenix Film Festival April 2 - April 9, 2009

As one of my favorite film characters, Cousin Red from Cheech and Chong's Next Movie so eloquently stated, "Holy sheep shit!" There is a buttload of good horror films to choose from at this year's Phoenix Film Festival.

All films will screen at the Harkins Scottdale/101 Theater at 7000 E. Mayo in Phoenix.

Special guests include such horror favorites as Virginia Madsen (The Haunting in Connecticut, The Number 23, Candyman, The Haunting, Bordello of Blood, Zombie High), Amy Smart (Mirrors, Strangeland), and Jonathon Schaech (Quarantine, Prom Night remake, and the upcoming Laid to Rest).

Horror Comes to Beverly Hills Film Festival April 1 - 5, 2009

There's slim pickens at the 2009 International Beverly Hills Film Festival as far as horror is concerned. Nonetheless, be sure to take the time to head over to the Clarity Theater at 100 N. Crescent Drive in the 90210 area code. Ahhhh, this is about three miles from my old stomping grounds. I do miss sunny California.

Anyway, tickets will cost you $12 a pop or $150 for a festival pass. Plus, there's a host of parties on hand at various prices. Check ticket prices here.

Interestingly, there is a new movie out about Texas serial killer Henry Lee Lucas called Drifter: Henry Lee Lucas. Of course, nothing will ever match the brilliance that is Henry: A Portrait of a Serial Killer. The film fest's website just so happens to have a photo of the original Henry, Michael Rooker, on the front page. Kudos!

On a ridiculous note, the new Henry is played by model/actor Antonio Sabato, Jr. Wayyyyy to pretty to play the one-eyed, slovenly Lucas, but, if Charlize Theron can pull off Aileen Wuornos, I guess anything's possible.

The Incredibly Slow Murderer.. Director Richard Gale Speaks About YouTube Controversy

Last week, I wrote about the controversy surrounding the posting of the entire short film, The Incredibly Slow Murderer with the Terribly Inefficient Weapon, on YouTube. As soon as I saw that the video had been pulled, I contacted the short film's director, Richard Gale, to get the inside scoop. Gale wrote me back immediately and explained things from his perspective:

I was reading Andrew Sullivan's blog like I do most mornings, like reading the morning paper, and all of a sudden I see my film, The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon, on his blog! The blood rushed to my face-- I knew someone had put it on You Tube. The person who did it was a guy in Hungary who somehow (I don't know how) got a copy and uploaded it. He didn't mean any harm-- he gave me credit on his page and posted a link to my site. And it got crazy amounts of views-- about 50,000 views within 48 hours, and was ranked as the #18 Top Rated Film on You Tube when he took it down at my request-- It was a really tough thing for me to do when it was going viral like that. So why take it down now?

The problem is-- it's been booked to exclusively play in several film festivals for the next few months.
Also, I'd like to see if I can sell the short to Comedy Central, or Sundance Channel, or IFC... and having it on You Tube eliminates those options. Plus, when a video is going viral -- as the filmmaker you want to be in control of the YouTube page to help guide interested traffic to your other works. I plan on releasing the film in a few months on You Tube, and later this Fall on DVD with a bunch of extras (including a full 90-minute "excerpt" from the 9-hour feature film).

In the meantime, this was a wild couple of days for myself and my friends who worked on the film -- it's served as a "marketing test" that lets us know this film is in demand by a lot of people, and that's a great thing.

So, count yourself lucky if you were one of those 50,000+ people who got to see TISMWTTIW last week as it is terribly funny and extremely efficient filmmaking. If not, get your butt out to one of the several film festivals listed in the above link where the short will be playing.

Horror Comes to Orlando at the Florida Film Festival - March 28 - April 5, 2009

So, the "horror" at this year's Florida Film Festival is noticably much tamer than say that of the Philadelphia Film Festival which is also unspooling this week. That does not, however, mean that some of these films won't be entertaining.

The FFF has a decidely more family-friendly horror angle and also seems to delve into some apocalyptic sci-fi and some supernaturalish thrillers.

Holy crap! Horror comes to Philly in a bigggggg way starting this weekend!!

The massive list of horror films slated for the Philadelphia Film Festival gets me all excited and I won't even be anywhere near the City of Brotherly Blood. Sucks for me because there are tons of seemingly great horror flicks in store for those of who will get to make it out.

In addition to the above-listed feature films, there are several excellent short films on display as well. They include Treevenge, The Incredibly Slow Murderer with a Terribly Inefficient Weapon, A Little Mouth to Feed, I Don’t Sleep I Dream, The Painter of Skies, Rite, The Fairy Princess, Side Effect, White Radishes, and Rx/OTC.

Several directors will be in attendance to answer questions about their films so be sure to check the listings.

One major disappointment has to be that a screening of director Ryan Nicholson (Live Feed, Gutterballs)'s living abortion monster flick, Hanger, has been cancelled. Hopefully, I will get to the bottom (of the barrel) of this.

The Incredibly Slow Murderer YouTube Controversy

Yesterday, as I was compiling the AFI Dallas Int'l FF Horror roster, I was lucky enough to stumble across a YouTube posting of Richard Gale's short horror/comedy film The Incredibly Slow Murderer with the Extrememly Inefficient Weapon. The silly, albeit, hilarious horror spoof was well-made, clever, and a pleasure to watch.

Well, I'm glad I saw it, because it has been unsummarily yanked from YT.

According to Gale's website, "THE HORRIBLY SLOW MURDERER WITH THE EXTREMELY INEFFICIENT WEAPON was posted on You Tube without permission and was removed. It is playing exclusively in Film Festivals for the next few months (see schedule below), and will be officially released on YouTube and elsewhere a few months from now. If you have any questions or would like more info, please click the Contact link above. Thank You!"

Bummer for those of you who can't travel to any of the film festivals to check it out!

Well, here goes nothing!

As a life-long horror fan, I am thrilled to introduce to the world (or at least the four or five of you who stumbled across here) the Festivals of Horror blog.

My goal here at FoH is to give horror filmmakers and film fanatics easy access to the myriad horror film festivals out there as well as a guide to which horror films will be playing at your "normal" film fests.

For you filmmakers, I intend to post festival dates, submission deadlines and fees, and contact information so you can get your masterpieces submitted and, hopefully, selected for the horror film festival circuit.

For you horror film fans, I will post the films playing at the numerous film festivals, showtimes, theater information, ticket prices and purchasing info, panel information if applicable, and whatever else I can dream up.

I will also post the occasional film review and encourage any and all filmmakers to send me a screener for possible review. Simply send to:
